What is the Youth Coalition for Road Safety?

We are passionate young people from around the world taking action on safer mobility and championing meaningful youth participation in road safety and beyond. We operate from a set of principles that define and guide our work, globally and locally.

We offer you resources, skills, partnerships, and opportunities to take your ideas to the next level and maximize their impact. We believe that global and local action is needed to make the world’s roads safer for everyone and connect it to key related topics such as health, sustainable cities, climate change, education, poverty, and equality.

Will you join us to start #ClaimingOurSpace? We continue the movement by #ClaimingOurSpace for safe mobility and at the decision-making table.

PRINCIPLES

1. Meaningful youth participation

Young people have a right to be adequately informed, consulted and empowered to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We are focusing on the SDGs that are linked to preventing road traffic injuries. As you know, road crashes are the biggest threat to young lives the world over. Youth themselves have the potential to accelerate and energize a road safety revolution as agents of change in their immediate communities and beyond.

2. Youth-driven

“Nothing about youth, without youth”. We believe in young people’s leadership and we want to put them at the centre of development; we ensure that all actions are led by young leaders. We will ensure the youth voice is front and center and always bring it to the table. We give young people the chance to succeed and to learn, generating leadership through experience.

--

3. Safe and sustainable mobility systems

We will pursue the development of integrated mobility systems that allows us to use safe and sustainable transport, walk and cycle safely as well as breathe clean air. All our efforts will be focused towards the creation of a system that is accessible and affordable for everyone, regardless of gender, age and socio-economic status.

--

4. Equality & diversity

We ensure the creation of equal opportunities for all young people. We pay special attention to diversity in terms of country, region, gender, expertise, field of studies and specialization in key development themes. We also champion and embrace people of all backgrounds, opinions and see diversty as an asset to our work. We promote diversity and inclusion as key elements to uphold equality of opportunity and acknowledge that a diverse team yields vibrant and innovative solutions. Read our Diversity Policy.

5. Global Youth Statement for Road Safety

As a key advocacy document written by youth, the Global Youth Statement for Road Safety acts as a key roadmap tool to open conversations about safe mobility and its implementation, call on stakeholders as well as guide strategic actions in countries and communities that the Youth Coalition will support across the world.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

Strategic objectives of the Youth Coalition:

  1. Increasing the number of young leaders advocating for a safe mobility system and their advocacy capacities, from a local and global perspective underpinned by our key principles;

  2. To scale up youth-led actions at a grassroots level to influence better policies and their implementation in local communities.

  3. Coordinating the Global Youth Coalition by offering resources, identifying skills gaps, and providing capacity development and partnerships to bring youth and relevant stakeholders (from broader health, mobility, and youth leadership) context together.

Global advocacy

Young people deserve a spot at the decision-making table so that they can contribute to the achievement of targets and goals that have relevance to their lives. We want to raise awareness about road safety and safe mobility issues in the most important national and international spaces and continue to break the silos by working through multi-sectoral approaches. Here are some of the things the Youth Coalition offers to support and empower ts members;

  • Advocacy skills training courses

  • Advocacy guide/toolkit

  • Young advocates at  international, regional, and national events

  • Youth Assemblies

  • Youth Consultations

Example of our activities

3rd ministerial conference
on road safety

All youth that attended the 2nd World Youth Assembly for Road Safety had the opportunity to discuss the future of road safety in their countries with key decision-makers. Beside the participation of 150+ young leaders in the actual event, some young leaders were invited to speak in various high-level sessions.

Commonwealth road safety initiative

Road traffic injuries are a serious threat for young people in the Commonwealth where more than 60% of the population is under the age of 30. The initiative places a focus on young people road trauma facing this demographic in its report. Youth are, through the Commonwealth Youth Forum, actively engaging in championing safe and sustainbale transport through this platform.

LOCAL ACTIONS

We shaped an incubator of local projects that provides support to the youth so that they can bring their ideas into reality. On an annual basis, The Youth Coalition selects and supports local impact projects that are oriented to address the most pressing issues in the city or area where the young leaders belong.

What is the difference between YOURS - Youth for Road Safety the Global Youth Coalition for Road Safety?

YOURS is the global NGO behind the Global Youth Coalition for Road Safety. It was set up in 2009 after the 1st World Youth Assembly for Road Safety in 2007 and focuses on 3 key areas, youth empowerment, advocacy and working with policy-makers. As a programme of YOURS, the Coalition works on all three of these elements of activity but is a stand-alone network of passionate young leaders working for road safety and safe mobility and a support structure of individual youth to take action.
