SHARING YOUTH PERSPECTIVES ON ROAD SAFETY AND MEANINGFUL YOUTH ENGAGEMENT

The Global Youth Coalition for Road Safety conducted a Global Youth Consultation to gather perspectives from young leaders on the connections between road safety and broader development issues.

This process generated valuable insights to help inform and advise policymakers in shaping strategies to #RethinkMobility.

YOUTH CONSULTATIONS REPORT

From November 2020 to February 2022, young leaders worldwide were invited to participate in a second round of Youth Consultations to gather data on their ideas and actions addressing road safety challenges in their communities.

This round also served as a follow-up on youth commitments from the first round of Youth Consultations, reflected in the Global Youth Statement for Road Safety. The second call resulted in 117 consultations, with participation from over 700 young leaders.

Based on the results of all consultations, youth leaders shared the types of projects they wanted to focus on. These were categorised into the most common project types: community mobilisation, peer-to-peer engagement, infrastructure change, and advocacy.

The predominant recommendations fell under community mobilisation, as young people identified a strong need to involve more communities in efforts to address road traffic crashes, one of the leading threats to young people’s lives.

The Youth Consultations and their results were made possible with the support of our technical partner, the World Health Organization, as well as Programme Partners TotalEnergies Foundation and Michelin Corporate Foundation, and Partner FIA Foundation.

THANK YOU FOR TAKING PART IN OUR YOUTH CONSULTATIONS

We extend our appreciation to everyone who took part in the Global Youth Consultations. The consultations served as a tool to gather youth voices, demands, and commitments around road safety and sustainable mobility.

They also contributed to advancing meaningful youth participation for safer roads and more sustainable mobility worldwide. Through the second round of consultations, participants shared how the Global Youth Statement was being implemented across different regions.

We appreciate all the valuable inputs that were shared throughout the process.

Early in 2020, the Global Youth Statement for Road Safety was adopted at the 2nd World Youth Assembly for Road Safety. Building on this key advocacy tool and its youth-defined priorities, young leaders implemented their demands and commitments within their communities.

The Youth Consultations demonstrated how youth-led action can support meaningful participation for safer roads and more sustainable mobility worldwide. They also captured how the Global Youth Statement for Road Safety was applied across different local contexts.

These efforts reflect the commitment and leadership of young people driving change in their communities.

YOUTH CONSULTATION OUTCOMES

GLOBAL YOUTH STATEMENT FOR ROAD SAFETY

The first round of consultations was submitted by over 160 delegates from 74 countries who attended the 2nd World Youth Assembly for Road Safety, held in Stockholm, Sweden in February 2020.

The document outlined the demands and commitments of young people on road safety, sustainable mobility, and meaningful youth engagement. It also examined road safety through the lens of the Sustainable Development Goals, highlighting its interconnections with broader development challenges worldwide.

The Global Youth Statement was presented to global ministers, leaders, decision-makers, and policymakers during the 3rd Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in February 2020.
