ABOUT THE YOUTH CONSULTATION

The Youth Consultation 2023 will gather the perspectives of young leaders that show the connections between road safety and broader development issues. This will provide valuable insights to influence and advise policymakers in strategies to #RethinkMobility and will give us a better idea of what the road safety situation is like for youth around the world.

The Consultation will be a way to meaningfully include young voices in the design, implementation, and accountability processes of road safety and sustainable mobility policy-making at local and international levels. It will feature interactive and informative videos, infographics, and prompted and general questions that will help create a solid idea of road safety and sustainable mobility issues on the ground.

The outcome of the Consultation process will inform a set of Policy Change recommendations for policymakers that put the road safety needs of young people and other vulnerable road users at the forefront. Get involved by completing the survey!

ROAD SAFETY FACTS

These are the latest statistics on the mortality of young people aged 15-29 due to road traffic injuries. • Road Traffic Deaths are the leading cause of death for young people aged 15-29.

  • 352,700 young people between the ages of 15-29 die every year on the world’s roads

  • Close to 1,000 young people die every day on the world’s roads.

  • 79% of all deaths among young people aged 15-29 are males.

  • Youth are much more likely to be killed in low- and middle-income countries than in high-income countries.

ROAD SAFETY AND THE GLOBAL AGENDA

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) help define the Youth Coalition’s priorities and its pursuit of practical solutions that save lives and uphold road safety and sustainable mobility policies. Understanding road safety as a cross-cutting issue with other topics such as good health, inequalities, climate action, sustainable cities, and education, is essential for accelerating action across the SDGs.

To create the biggest impact, young people are campaigning and advocating for policy change and implementing proven solutions that contribute to the SDGs at a community and global level.  The Youth Coalition supports its members in linking road safety with the rest of the Global Goals. Through the Global Youth Statement for Road Safety, young leaders are able to present their demands and commitments for safe and sustainable transportation and road safety, in general.

GET INVOLVED

At the Global Youth Coalition for Road Safety, art and action are the most relevant approaches to support youth in delivering their advocacy messages for meaningful youth participation in road safety and sustainable mobility and also creating awareness about road safety being the number one killer of youth; a fact that demands action.

Since 2020, we have established formal mechanisms to collect thousands of youth voices from different countries, so they can share their views on how safe they feel in their communities regarding road safety, and what the challenges, demands and commitments that they agree on to overcome their leading cause of death.
