Local Actions project results published in Road Safety Journal

In 2021, the Youth Coalition funded a project led by Titis Efrindu and Estiara Ellizar titled “Safer Street Participatory Design with Youth.” The project involved the participation of young people in learning and practicing road safety risk assessment in surrounding areas such as schools.

Through the project, our youth leaders looked to raise collective awareness of road safety issues, especially among children. To do this, young people participating in the project created and shared solutions from assessing safer street designs.

The project also makes use of the iRAP - International Road Assessment Programme’s Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) Methodology.

The project was implemented from 2021 to 2022, resulting in an improved crossing at Junior High School 1 in Surakarta City, Indonesia. The project also resulted in roadside survey data as well as different accounts and observations from the participating students.

These results were compiled in a paper written by Estiara Ellizar, Sukma Larastiti, Titis Efrindu Bawono, Windu Mulyana, Cahyadi Kurniawan titled Youth Participation in School Safety Zones Assessment: A Case Study in Indonesia which was published in the Journal of Road Safety.

“This research aims to assess the school safety zones using the Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) from the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) and propose recommendations for safer road infrastructure using a youth participation approach” - Paper abstract

The paper contains notes on advocacy that will help improve road safety in school areas affected by the flyover in Surakarta. Other goals of the paper include encouraging other studies that will help change and improve transportation policies that will help create a safer Indonesia.

“Ensuring child safety in the school area is only a small part of all road safety issues.”

The research was made possible through the support of the Youth Coalition, the iRAP SR4S methodology, and the efforts of non-government organization Transpologi which helped engage, assist, and guide the participants of the project.
