Youth Coalition member joins African Youth SDG Summit

Global Youth Coalition member, Kenneth Mulinde from Uganda, is joining the African Youth SDG Summit through a session with the United Nations Road Safety Fund (UNRSF). The event is one of many during the Summit and will discuss the impact that young people can make using their entrepreneurial skills on the social impact around road safety. Kenny’s intervention will be focusing on women and road safety. The event is taking place on the 9th of March, Wednesday, at 15:30 Addis Ababa time.

About the Summit
The UNRSF and Ye! have organized a side-event at the African Youth SDG Summit to discuss and examine good practices, challenges, lessons learned, and key considerations linked to entrepreneurship for road safety and sustainable mobility. They are joined by the United Nations, young entrepreneurs, and representatives from the private sector who are working on safe and sustainable mobility.

The event is focused on young people and is underlined by the belief that young people can make valuable contributions in a number of developmental areas which include entrepreneurship on technology and Artificial Intelligence initiatives designed for safe and sustainable mobility.

The discussions will touch on issues around smart vehicles, smart infrastructure, sustainable mobility, safe mobility, and data. All these will be viewed on how they operate and how they’ve changed through the COVID-19 era where mobility has begun to be viewed differently. The global community has taken notice of the importance and necessity of active mobility such as walking and cycling. The discussions will touch on the opportunities and challenges that can arise because of this phenomenon.

Women and road safety
With the topics on transport and mobility, there is still a necessity to consider how it especially affects vulnerable road users such as women. During his intervention, Kenny will talk about the SDG 5: Gender Equality policy brief being produced by the Youth Coalition.

The brief highlights how girls and women are often overlooked when it comes to the transport and mobility system. It touches on the physical, emotional, and economical toll road crashes have on women, especially women from low-and-middle-income countries.

Kenny is one of the Youth Coalition’s Local Actions winners. His project, Road Smart Ninjaz, highlights the road safety realities young girls and women face in Uganda. His project not only helped raise awareness on the issue but also resulted in orienting and educating local boda-boda drivers about road safety and gender.
