JBridging the Gap in Motorcycle Passenger Helmet Use in Kampala

Project theme: Motorcycle Safety

by ANGELA TUMUHAIRWE

This project aims to reduce road traffic injuries and fatalities in Kampala by addressing the critical disparity in motorcycle helmet use between riders and passengers. Through targeted road safety workshops, youth engagement, data collection, and a university innovation challenge, the initiative empowers over 300 young people to drive awareness and behavioural change.

The project advocates for certified helmet standards, dual-helmet purchase policies, and equitable enforcement for both riders and passengers. It culminates in a report detailing actionable recommendations, aligning with national and global road safety goals to create safer, more inclusive urban mobility for Uganda’s most vulnerable road users.
