RETORNO SEGURO A CLASES

BY ALDO GONZALEZ BARRERA FROM MEXICO

Retorno Seguro a Clases will address the challenges for youth activists in Mexico. The implementation of Retorno Seguro a Clases will lead to road safety projects that addresses the issue of dangerous school zones.

The project will involve the schools in the generation of local diagnoses, tactical urbanism interventions, and in committing and working with authorities to guarantee a safe return to schools in a post-pandemic world.

The goal of the project is to contribute in the reduction of road traffic injuries around three different school zones in Mexico city, by implementing the “caminito a la escuela” methodology as a sustainable post-COVID strategy by 2022.

Identify risky pedestrian crossings for return to classes

Through the local actions project, Liga Peatonal was able to select cities and school zones where they identified crossings and other areas that are unsafe for young students. The selection was based on analysis that studied the number of road crashes involving young people around school zones. The goal is to create better design that would guarantee the safety of students on their way to school.
