SAFE ROADS IN SURKHET

BY HEMANT TIWARI FROM NEPAL

Road Safety Audit (RSA) is usually only common on the central government level and is often ignored at a provincial and local level in Nepal. The Western part of the country is often forgotten in terms of road infrastructure despite having a high rate of fatal crashes.

Surkhet, the capital city of Karnali Province, is witnessing an increase in road crashes. The main aim of this project is to advocate for safer road infrastructure in all kinds of roads and make Road Safety Audit (RSA) mandatory. The project will focus on capacity building on safer road infrastructure along with RSA among technical, bureaucratic, and political leaders at central, provincial, and local government.

Apart from the capacity building; an RSA of more than 30 kilometers in the area will be conducted and an RSA report will be prepared based on which area the team will implement the project and where different stakeholders will be advised to invest in road safety infrastructure.
