SAFER STREET PARTICIPATORY DESIGN WITH YOUTH

The participatory approach of the project involves youth learning and practicing road safety risk assessment at surrounding areas based on their experiences. The approach aims to raise collective awareness on road safety issues among children.

In the participatory design phase, youth will take part in giving solutions based on group workshops and discussion. To assess the safer street design made by youth, the project will use iRAP Star Rating for Schools tool to analyze the safety of the road.

It’s goal is to have zero road traffic fatalities around 1 junior high school located in the Sekolah Menengah Pertama Negeri (SMPN) area by 2022 so that we support the achievement of the road safety Global Goals.

ABOUT THE PROJECT LEAD

 Titis is an urban mobility planner works as a consultant in Indonesia. Titis’s work is to give advice for the local and provincial governments in supporting sustainable transportation implementation in Indonesian cities includes road safety.

He is involved the road safety development starts in 2018 with the development of neighborhood safety area in Bandung. In this experience, Titis starts to campaign the sustainable transportation and Road Safety. Titis with his team, transportologi, has won the local action awards from YOURS in 2020. The project aims to improve the road safety near school with youth involvement and participatory design approach.

Road safety assessment among students

Local actions winner, Titis Efrindu along with his team from Transportologi in Indonesia, conducted road safety perspective survey for assessing the level of children, parents and teacher’s understanding of road safety and the potential risks of travel. The team found some highlighted issues that the respondents saw as important.

ABOUT THE LEAD ORGANISATION

Transportologi is an organization for encouraging sustainable urban transport implementation by conducting the discussion about transportation and its relation to economy, social, politics and environment. Transportologi is well-known community in Solo that actively advocates for youth facilitation related to sustainable transportation and focus group discussions.
