Claiming Safe School Streets

Project theme: Sustainable, Inclusive and Active Mobility (SIAM) solutions; Speed reduction

BY elizabete NASIBOVA

Claiming Safe School Streets is a youth-led initiative improving road safety near schools in cities of Azerbaijan. It tackles speeding and unsafe infrastructure through data-driven assessments, policy advocacy, and creative awareness campaigns. Youth actively gain skills and knowledge in road safety, risk assessment, data analysis, and meaningful advocacy—pushing for 30 km/h default speed limits at school zones nationwide.

They also co-create social media campaigns, gaining not just expertise but also a sense of belonging and purpose. As the most vulnerable road users, youth see that even small actions can raise awareness and spark real change for safer daily travel.

ABOUT THE LEAD ORGANISATION

National Automobile Club of Azerbaijan (AMAK)

The National Automobile Club of Azerbaijan (AMAK) has been advocating for road safety and sustainable mobility since 2015. As a non-profit and FIA member, AMAK leads data-driven initiatives combining advocacy, education, and infrastructure improvements. Its achievements include Azerbaijan’s first 20 km/h and 30 km/h school zones, a behavioral assessment of drivers during COP29, and youth engagement through Star Rating for Schools and Traffic Conflict Analysis. AMAK’s latest campaign, Race on the Playseat Simulator, Not on the Roads, uses e-sport to engage youth and raise awareness about speeding. AMAK champions inclusive, safe, and people-centered mobility for all road users.
