ADVOCATING PEDESTRIAN RIGHTS THROUGH MAPPING INITIATIVE

BY Richard Santoso

The project looks to utilise innovation, data, and technology through the creation of a mobile app to report pedestrian rights violations like broken sidewalks, illegal parking, and faded zebra crossings.

Photos, locations, and times of occurrence will be collected and visualized on a public map. The map will also display the locations of schools in the city so we can assess the condition of pedestrian access around them.

The team behind the project will collect the data while doing “Tamasya Trotoar” (sidewalk sightseeing), where they will travel the sidewalks around schools while campaigning about road safety. This activity is part of efforts to raise public awareness about road safety while facilitating direct involvement in advocating our issue.

Reports will be anonymous and will include other information (age range, gender) to capture pedestrian behaviour. This data complements later reports, ensuring policies align with community needs. Results will be reported to the local government to advocate for policy changes regarding safety and inclusive access for pedestrians.
