Coalition Member, Vida Urgente, launches Voting for Life – a project that gathers students from different schools in Porto Alegre, South of Brazil to talk about mobility and road safety with candidates running for mayor in the city.

According to the 2020 Safety Report: Porto Alegre, many roads outside the city are in “very poor condition” with numerous potholes along different lengths. In fact, some roads become unpassable during rainy seasons.

The report continues that traffic in Porto Alegre is “aggressive and unpredictable”, emphasizing that drivers are encouraged to keep doors locked, windows closed, and valuables out of sight when stopped in traffic. Vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists are the common victims of road crashes.

These issues were also raised in the Global Youth Statement for Road Safety.

To connect with the mayoral candidate, the program will present a series of online meetings where young people themselves will raise points and ask questions about sustainable mobility and road safety in Porto Alegre.

Founder of the Thiago Gonzaga Foundation and the Vida Urgente Program, Diza Gonzaga, raises the importance of young people in curbing road crashes and promoting safe roads and sustainable mobility in Brazil and all over the world.

In young people, I place my hope for a better future, without violence and full of life. I dare to say that only with the participation of youth, it is possible to transform our city and the whole world.
— Diza Gonzaga, Founder of the Thiago Gonzaga Foundation and the Vida Urgente Program

Over 700 students from Porto Alegre participated in the online dialogue. The group discussed road safety and youth participation in the city, calling on future politicians to prioritize safe roads and sustainable mobility.

Participants also wrote letters to the different candidates to present their demands, commitments, and dreams for Porto Alegre.

The Vida Urgente Program develops projects and actions of education, culture, assistance, and social mobilization that involves different institutions and sectors of the public in the construction of safer roads for all.
