Happy 3rd Anniversary to the Global Youth Coalition!

Last week, 7 July, we at the Global Youth Coalition for Road Safety celebrated our third anniversary in a virtual social event titled “We Speak Your Language.” The event gathered members, followers, and partners of the Youth Coalition in an interactive session that went back to our beginnings as an organization, leading up to the milestones and achievements we achieved through our young leaders.

The anniversary celebration offered two different time schedules to accommodate different areas of the globe. The first was set at 3 PM CET for the African, Asian, European, on Oceania regions and the second at 4 PM CST for the Latin America, North America, and Caribbean regions. It featured languages that included English, Arabic, Indonesia, Spanish, Portuguese, and French.

The event celebrated how far our members have gone to help address road safety issues in their countries and communities. Our members were supported by the different programs of the Youth Coalition that include the Local Actions, YOURS Academy, the Policymakers’ Toolkit, SDG Policy Briefs, and more.

During the event, YOURS - Youth for Road Safety Executive Director Raquel Barrios gave a message to our members to talk about the road safety journey young people have taken through the Global Youth Coalition.

”I am beyond excited to see a vibrant and empowered youth community growing; [something] that is diverse, that is inclusive, and that is proactive. I believe your ideas and your will are highly relevant at this time when the clock is ticking to halve the number of road crashes. Governments are crying for fresh ideas, for new perspectives that could bring sustainability to their plans and their road safety strategies at the global and national levels. So that is what you have as youth. Keep pushing, prepare yourself, be loud, and continue claiming your space.”

Our anniversary event not only highlighted all the achievements of the organization and of our young leaders, it only served as an opportunity for participants to get to know one another and to learn more about the Youth Coalition through a game of trivia. This was done through breakout rooms divided through the different languages our members spoke.

The questions asked were about the global road safety problem and youth and details about the Youth Coalition.

The session ended with a big shoutout to members and partners who have helped the Youth Coalition become what it is today. The work still continues - there are still so many things that need to be done. But, with the help of our youth leaders, we know anything is possible.
