Local Actions project generating impact at UHasselt University

Our Local Actions Winner Brian Ssemwanga is working closely with his colleagues at the Transportation Sciences Network to improve the safety of active traveler students at Hasselt University who cycle and walk to academic institutions in Hasselt and Diepenbeek. As part of his project, he is supporting intern students to develop research focusing on the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. This week, Brian spoke to one of the interns to share his experience with the members of the Global Youth Coalition.

Meet Dawit

Dawit is a student at UHasselt university conducting his master’s in transportation sciences. His main research interest is Transport Planning and Policy.

As part of the International MSc in Transportation Sciences, I am conducting my Internship with the Transportation Sciences Network. I have worked on Safer Roads Now (SRN), a project funded by the Global Coalition for Youth Safety through Local Actions. The SRN project seeks to increase the safety of international students who walk and cycle to various academic institutions in Hasselt and Diepenbeek.

Brian tells us that the internship selection process was transparent. The invitation was forwarded to all prospective interns, and they were informed about the selected topic. After that, they were interviewed by the internship supervisor.

I feel so happy that I was at the end selected and provided with a desk at the Transportation Research Institute (IMOB) at UHasselt. Says Dawit.

We were interested to learn how Dawit brings research and advocacy that go hand in hand to make impactful changes in road safety. He told us about his role during the internship.

My role as a researcher is to investigate the potential of soft mobility modes usage among international students and in-depth study of the transport related emissions of home-to-university trips for vehicular trips. I am more than ever interested in connecting SDG11 and SDG13 with Road Safety and transportation issues. As a youth advocate, research is my powerful tool to bring change to my community. Says Dawit.

We asked Dawit about what he has learned so far and we were impressed by the impact of this Local Actions project on his academic journey.

I am grateful for the adequate support and professional working exposure from my colleagues at UHasselt. This project is definitely boosting my experience as an intern. Throughout the SRN project, I have learnt to analyze data, conduct research, make reports and present my work to the supervisors. These technical work skills will prepare me for my awaiting future career.

We finally asked Dawit to share an inspiring message to the members of the Global Youth Coalition.

The well-being of individuals and communities, as well as the development and prosperity of the economy, depend on the safety of the roads. Hence, the Global Youth Coalition members should strive to enhance this global concern as they keep up with the good work. I invite all youth to join the Coalition and be actively engaged in the opportunities they offer.
