Last Saturday, July 3, Local Actions winner Sana’ Khasawneh led and organized the first youth-led road safety workshop in Jordan to create a Youth Manifesto for Road Safety at Irbid National University. The day-long workshop is part of Sana’s Local Actions initiative, Up to zer0 that aims to make Jordanian youth more aware of road safety and also to get them involved in making roads safer for everyone.

The workshop focused on connecting the different Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a focus on SDG 3: Health, SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities, and SDG 13: Climate Action. The main goal was to create potential solutions to address the road safety situation in Jordan and reduce road fatalities to zero.

To facilitate the session, participants were divided into groups according to the four SDGs. Each group was provided with a factsheet that summarized the road safety situation in Jordan while also viewing it through the global goals. Each group was able to create an action plan to address the different road safety issues that were identified.

Participants included Esra’ Zoubi, Ayat Qaralleh, Dalia Zayed, Wael Abu Lehia, Hazem Zureiqat, Dr. Deyala Tarawneh, Reem Halaseh, Ghayda al Sona, Rahmeh Hiary, Sanad Hiasat, Abdallah Tabbalat, Omar Alajlouni, Hala S. Murad, and Farah Maayrah.

The action plans and other outcomes of the workshop will be developed into a final manifesto to present to stakeholders in the region. Through the initiative, Sana’ is working to reach more young people and get them involved in road safety efforts in Jordan.
