The United Nations, Youth 2030, and the ECOSOC Youth Forum have opened their applications for the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum 2022. The Forum will be the second virtual one of its kind and will take place from the 19th to the 20th of April. This year’s theme is “Building back better from COVID- 19 while advancing the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda”. The Forum will also be an opportunity to review the progress of achieving the targets under the 2030 Agenda.

The ECOSOC Youth Forum is an opportunity for young people to come together to discuss the current situations they face into the third year of the pandemic and into the progress of the 2030 Agenda. It will also be an opportunity for them to engage with their peers and other stakeholders to come up with solutions to address the different issues young people face.

Road crashes are one of the most pressing issues young people face. As the leading killer of young people aged 15 to 29 worldwide, road crashes take over 300,000 young lives every year and injure thousands more.

Road safety issues go beyond road crashes. Road safety interlinks with other areas under the 2030 Agenda which include health, education, gender and equality, sustainable cities, and climate action. Addressing road safety issues and ensuring that everyone, especially young people, has access to sustainable mobility and safe road infrastructure would positively contribute to social and economic development, especially in low-and-middle-income countries.

The Forum will be an opportunity for youth leaders to elevate their demands for safer roads through meaningful youth engagement and direct it to the local and global leaders joining the delegation.

Through the Forum, youth leaders from around the world will have the opportunity to engage with government representatives, youth delegates, policymakers, and other relevant stakeholders in civil society and the private sector. They will contribute to the review of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs and to shaping policy recommendations at the HLPF and other Intergovernmental fora, such as the UN Transforming Education Summit, the UN Ocean Conference, the Financing for Development (FfD) Forum, among others.

The two-day event will feature plenary sessions, interactive thematic and regionally based discussions. Young people are encouraged to share best practices, lessons learned, solutions as well as creative and innovative ideas with Member States, other youth, and stakeholders on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and also on the sustainable development goals under review in the Economic and Social Council and the High-level Political Forum in 2022.
