YOURS Academy Module on Meaningful Youth Participation launched during IYD 2023

16 August 2023 - YOURS - Youth for Road Safety through the Global Youth Coalition for Road Safety launched its Module on Meaningful Youth Participation for International Youth Day 2023. 

During the session, YOURS Academy Facilitators Manpreet Darroch and Laura Daniela Gomez discussed Meaningful Youth Participation as a theory and practice that needs to be systematically integrated into the decision-making process. They highlighted its benefits and impacts on road safety and sustainable mobility.

The YOURS Academy currently has four modules for youth leaders can take; Youth and the Global Road Safety Problem, the Safe System Approach and Risk Factors, Road Safety and the Sustainable Development Goals, and Meaningful Youth Participation in Road Safety. Our most recent module builds on the knowledge gained from the first three courses.

The session featured different speakers who worked with different organizations that actively and meaningfully engage with young people. Umayangga Yogalingam from Parachute and Beatrice Dumaswala from the FIA Foundation, who reviewed the module on Meaningful Youth Participation with Aggie Krasnolucka also from FIA Foundation, shared their thoughts on the contents of the course. 

“It was a great, interesting experience to review [the module]. It’s a great moment to launch this because there’s a lot of talk about involving youth in decision-making. I think this module will really encourage and equip all the young leaders who want to make change, to take the first step which is usually the hardest one. I think the media is varying, it’s interactive, so well tailored to the audience, to the youth, it’s super fun and I think there’s so much to learn from there, ” - Beatrice Dumaswala on the Module 

The session also featured testimonials from young leaders who have been working with decision-makers from a very young age. Ines Yabar from Next Generation Fellows and Alison Collard de Beaufort from the Vision Zero Youth Council and the Global Youth Coalition for Road Safety.

Ines and Alison talked about their experiences as young people fighting for a better future. They shared some challenges they faced, some lessons they learned, and some thoughts that will help young people continue on the track of their work and passion.
