The “Empowering Women for Safe and Inclusive Mobility in Abuja” project is designed to address the gender-specific challenges faced by women in road safety, particularly in Abuja, Nigeria.
Improving road transport systems to address women's mobility needs and advocating for gender-inclusive policies are crucial in addressing the identified issues in Abuja. This project seeks to educate and empower young women aged 18-35 on road safety, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 or Good Health and Well-Being, 4 or Quality Education, 5 or Gender Equality, and 10 or Reduced Inequalities.
Reports have revealed that women in Abuja Nigeria encounter harassment, inequality in transport system usage, and overall poor safety and security on the road. Such a report is highlighted by the tragic loss of an ambitious young lady in 2023 and a renowned On Air Personality (OAP) in 2024, among other cases.
Research has also revealed that females in Abuja use more public transport services than males, their demographic characteristics affect their choices of public transport use, and their trip-related characteristics play a vital role in their use of public transport. Men are generally more satisfied and face fewer challenges than women in accessing and using public transport services.
