3. Can you tell us about your area's road safety and sustainable mobility situation?
The Indian road accident scenario is very challenging. As traffic motorization increases, this scenario becomes more difficult to handle. In 2022, the country recorded a total of 4,61,312 accidents, resulting in around 1.5 fatalities and 3.8 injuries. Specifically, the state where I currently reside, Gujarat, recorded approximately 7,000 fatalities in 2022.
On the other hand, central and state governments, NGOs, traffic departments, special road safety cells, and road safety experts are working aggressively to transform this grim situation. Furthermore, by analysing the current policy shift and embracing the new dimensions of sustainable mobility, the country may require more time to achieve its desired goal of thriving in sustainable mobility.
4. Why do you think it’s essential to include young people in local and global road safety efforts?
We, as a younger generation, play an important role in developing and implementing positive practices around the world. I firmly believe that we, as young people, must learn from past mistakes that lead to road crashes and other challenges, and collaborate to steer clear of fraudulent practices by proposing innovative practices and fostering a safer environment.
