3. Can you tell us about your area's road safety and sustainable mobility situation?
In Belize, road safety and sustainable mobility are pressing concerns. We face a high number of traffic accidents, often leading to severe injuries or even fatalities. These incidents are frequently caused by reckless driving, poor road infrastructure, and inadequate enforcement of traffic laws. Sustainable mobility is also a challenge, with limited public transportation options and a heavy reliance on private vehicles. Although efforts are underway to improve road conditions, enhance public transportation, and educate the public on safe driving practices, there is still much work to be done.
4. Why do you think it's essential to include young people in local and global road safety efforts?
Young people are at the heart of road safety initiatives because they are often the most affected by traffic accidents. Their perspectives and needs must be addressed. Moreover, youth bring fresh ideas, boundless energy, and a strong commitment to change. They are also more inclined to adopt and advocate for sustainable mobility practices. Engaging young people in these efforts ensures we develop effective, innovative solutions and create a safer, more sustainable future for all.
5. Why did you join the Global Youth Coalition for Road Safety?
I joined the Global Youth Coalition for Road Safety because I believe in the power of collective action and the profound impact young people can have on road safety initiatives. The coalition offers a platform to connect with like-minded individuals and organizations, share knowledge and resources, and collaborate on projects that make a real difference. Being part of a global network amplifies our efforts and allows us to learn from best practices worldwide.
