Local Actions team gathers NMT data across Kampala

The Local Actions team behind the “Promotion of NMT Infrastructure Usage in Kampala” project kicked off their work by conducting data gathering operations across five divisions in Kampala, Uganda. The process focused on assessing local youth knowledge of what Non-Motorised Transport Infrastructure is and what it should be able to deliver as an element of the transport system.

The data revealed that ”Most of the youth seemed to be knowledgeable about NMT facilities but are frustrated by the individuals who abuse them.”

Apart from understanding youth perception of NMT Infrastructure, the data also revealed the level of knowledge youth had about NMT and road safety in the area. Because of the data gathered, the Local Actions team was able to create Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) Materials that could be used to educate and inform children and youth about road safety, NMT, and the transport system.

These materials once finalised with the help of the Youth Coalition, were used for awareness-raising campaigns in schools in the Kampala Region.

Students were taught basic road safety signs, what they meant, and should do when encountering these markers on their way to and from school. The team also shared some images of warning, regulatory, and informative signs.
