PromotIon of NMT Infrastructure Usage

LED BY Edmond Atwine FROM UGANDA

An efficient and integrated transport infrastructure network is one of the crucial drivers of economic growth and increased road safety. In Uganda, road infrastructure facilities are shared between motorised vehicles and non-motorised vehicles. This results in increased road crashes in the area, as reflected in the Uganda Police Report 2021. The situation could be improved if there were strong road safety policy interventions, better infrastructure development, and increased awareness programs for the community.

The Promotion of Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) Infrastructure Usage in Kampala, Uganda, sensitised people on the realities road users faced on Ugandan roads and influenced NMT policy reviews in the city. The project engaged youth in the Kampala metropolitan area, the Mwamba Development Agency, policymakers, school children, and the media.

The activities of the project included: rapid assessment, development of resource materials, community mapping and mobilisation, training of trainers, media engagement, awareness raising and monitoring and evaluation activities with a collaborating partner, the Uganda Road Accident Reduction Network Organization (URRENO).

ABOUT THE PROJECT LEAD

Atwine currently works as a logistics officer and research assistant for the Uganda Road Accident Reduction Network Organization (URRENO).

"Working with URRENO has exposed me to several challenges within the transport sector, some of which I strongly believe can be reversed through advocating for the promotion of NMT infrastructure usage in Kampala. The experience and skills I acquired at URRENO, paired with my passion for road safety promotion, motivated me to lead and mobilise youth to take part and cause the necessary changes."

Impact snapshots

  • Collected evidence on non-motorised transport needs across 5 city divisions to inform youth-led road safety advocacy.

  • Engaged national and local road authorities to promote collaboration on safer non-motorised transport infrastructure and future road safety initiatives.

ABOUT THE LEAD ORGANIsATION

Uganda Road Accident Reduction Network Organization (URRENO)

The Uganda Road Accident Reduction Network Organization (URRENO) is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) dedicated to the promotion of the "Safe System" context and providing advice on each of the Safe System pillars (road safety management, safe roads, safe speeds, safe vehicles, safe road users, and post-crash care) while recognising that evidence-based solutions must be drawn from across pillars to produce effective road safety outcomes.

It promotes road safety through training, awareness-raising, advocacy and research.
