Road Safety Promoters street maps Monterrey

The “Road Safety Promoters” project seeks to encourage mobility behaviour change among the youth and upgrade the infrastructure conditions to guarantee safe mobility and improve inhabitants’ quality of life through collaborative efforts with municipalities and neighbourhood communities.

To determine the mobility styles of youth in the area, MOVAC - the team behind the Local Actions project - worked with youth to create tools that will help them to gather road safety data. These tools include; survey forms, mapping forms for active people, and survey forms for not-so-active people.

The methodology maintained by Gehl Architects and the redesigns made by the MOVAC team specifically resulted in the construction of tools that respond to the specific needs of the area and would ideally result in targeted tactical urbanism interventions.

The team also participated in measuring the speed of private vehicles that also made use of the streets through a Motor Vehicle Speed Study. The team was equipped with speed guns to get accurate measurements of how drivers behaved in streets across Monterrey.

Most of the vehicles followed the right speed according to the street design, measuring up to 20 km/h to 23 km/h. People in the area were also asked for their opinions and experiences with the walkability of the roads with respect to the vehicle and pre-existing infrastructure.
