Local Actions winner leads helmet community in Indonesia

For her Local Actions project, Vania Emmanuela and her team have successfully organized Focus Group Discussions with youth and motorcycle taxi drivers. The discussion had 57 participants who were engaged in an open discussion on the safety of motorcycle drivers with a special emphasis on the proper use of helmets.

The discussion also revolved around the factors that contributed to the number of road crashes in the area and the identification of solutions on how to prevent them. The participants were well-equipped with their ideas, drawing their opinions from their day-to-day experiences.

Vania and her team also hosted a one-day training event that helped motorcyclists and other road users better understand the basics of road safety, the importance of helmet use, and the role of public communications in relation to raising awareness on road safety topics.

Following the training, the participants joined a ground campaign that was held in three locations in Bandung. The campaign focused on educating motorcyclists on how to wear helmets properly.

Participants were awarded certificates of participation for their involvement.

Vania and her team also organized a social media campaign where she and her team talked about road safety and helmet use through infographics, video series, and TikTok challenges.

They invited the participants to create and submit their own videos around the issues discussed during the earlier parts of the campaign. This resulted in a total of 19 videos submitted. The team has garnered 13,000 views on Instagram and over 1,000 views on TikTok.
