Regional leader attends UNITE’s Camp 2030 and LCOY USA

Earlier this September, UNITE 2030 hosted CAMP 2030, a global innovation lab for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Camp 2030 was a global, in-person convening of different young leaders under the UNITE 2030 umbrella. The Camp brought together top youth leaders across the globe for a six-day event anchored in the innovation and co-creation of solutions to address the challenges of the Global Goals.

One of our North America regional leaders, Yasmine al Moghrabi, attended Camp 2030 to talk about the Youth Coalition and the correlation between road safety and climate action. She also attended the Local Conference of Youth or LCOY USA; an event under the umbrella of YOUNGO - the official youth constituency of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

I am very grateful to have been selected from among 3,000 global applicants to attend Camp 2030 which ran from 11 September to 17 September 2022. Throughout that week, I got to meet over 200 changemakers from all over the world. I was also selected from among these 200 young people to be interviewed as a camper spotlight and was the only young person concerned with road safety.

During the camp in Upstate New York, I worked with four young people to develop solutions that could address climate change. I chose to work on SDG 13: Climate Action: out of 7 other tracks that were chosen to work on during camp. We took Brazil as our case study where in just 3 days we were able to research, communicate and interview people facing problems from changing climatic conditions.

We then pitched our solution to experts composed of people affiliated with UN. We won the first place for Track 13. We also made it to the billboard on the famous Times Square in New York.

It was an honor and pleasure to be a delegate during the Local Conference of Youth (LCOY USA) 2022 which was held at Drexel University and The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University from Friday, Sept. 23 through Sunday, Sept. 25, 2022.

LCOY USA is America’s first Local Conference of Youth and a YOUNGO endorsed event and a gathering of young people from across the United States that will contribute to an international statement on behalf of the youth of the world at the next United Nations Climate Change Conference.

During this conference, I had the opportunity to represent the Global Youth Coalition for Road Safety by conducting an interactive side event that includes an overview, presenting the global art exhibition, and explaining the correlation between climate change and road safety through an amazing game “Raise if hand if”. I also attended and participated in thematic sessions discussing climate adaptation, climate justice, health, and more.

The experience that I was able to receive was unique. It was filled with new friendships, renewed passion, and opportunities for innovation. I received positive feedback and support from these young people in my road safety work. People who attended these two events always asked me: What is the relationship between road safety and climate change? I always saw the surprise on their faces when I explain to them the impact of climate change on road infrastructure and mobility and that road safety is a basic human right and it's not just about speed and seat belts. It is way greater than to be summarized.

But I can ensure one thing; this experience is just the beginning.
