"Safer Roads, Save our Lives": YLB member leads workshop in Indonesia

Estiara Ellizar, one of our youth leadership board members, led a road safety workshop for the students of Junior High School 22 Bandung City to work on providing safer routes for students through the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) Methodology.

The workshop titled “Safer Roads, Save our Lives” aimed to provide young people with knowledge about road safety and, more importantly, empower them to meaningfully participate in decision-making processes to improve road safety around their school zone. It ran from August 13 - 28.

The workshop Estiara led was part of the Global Road Safety Leadership Courses (GRSLC) Alumni Programme and was made possible through our support as the Global Youth Coalition.

The workshop saw the participating students take part in roadside surveys assessing the safety of the school. It uses the SR4S methodology; the first ever systematic and evidence-based tool for measuring, managing, and communicating the risk children are exposed to on school journeys. It also included interactive discussions, role-played appeals to decision-makers, and a social media challenge that sought to raise awareness of road safety among other students.

Apart from the roadside surveys, the data used during the workshop were based on the experiences and observations of the students. During one of the workshop sessions, one of the students shared that “we are not only identifying the problems but also finding solutions,” touching on the importance of youth involvement in the road safety process.

The workshop is made possible by the grant from Global Road Safety Leadership Course: Alumni Fellowship Program. It is co-organized by the Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit (JH-IIRU) and the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) and fully supported by the Global Youth Coalition for Road Safety.

Estiara is mentored by Greg Smith, Global Programme Director at iRAP.
