Uzima Ari leads "hotspot mappings" along streets of Mbala, Uganda

The “Walk with me: Healthier and Greener Journeys to School” project seeks to promote active mobility among children in Mbale City, Uganda. The implementation of the project kicked off with “hotspot mappings” that were led by learners with disabilities.

Through, ‘hotspot mapping’, Uzima Ari and the learners who participated were able to identify high-risk areas that needed to be addressed to cater to the needs of vulnerable road users, especially students with disabilities. The students and the team were accompanied by traffic police and district engineers for safety purposes.

Through the mapping activity, Uzima Ari looks to empower children to become safe road users, national advocates for safer roads, and active mobility champions with a keen focus on walkability.

The hotspot mappings were done in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES), the Mbale District Engineers, the Traffic Police, Mbale District Education Office (Department of Special Needs) and Safety and Health Association of Uganda (SHAU) to identify areas for modifications.
