YLB Member awarded with Best Civil Servant Award in Indonesia

Indonesia, 18 September 2023 - Youth Leadership Board Member Estiara Ellizar was awarded Best Civil Servant under the “Most Talented Youth - The Future Leader” category by the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation (MoT). Estiara won the award beating out 26 other nominees chosen from the MoT’s 34,000 employees.

The awards ceremony was part of Indonesia’s National Transport Day. As the best civil servant under the MoT, Estiara exhibits her qualities as a skilled, competent, and adaptive worker ready to address policies and projects around a government environment. Under the most talented youth, Estiara carries the torch for youth voices not just in Indonesia but around the world.

Estiara works as the Transport Planner at the Transport Policy Agency for the Indonesia MoT.

Estiara has been serving as a Youth Leadership Board member of the Global Youth Coalition since 2021. She has worked under different working groups including advocacy, capacity development, youth members, and Local Actions to ensure that youth voices are represented in the Youth Coalition’s activities, projects, and initiatives.

Estiara has also been part of Local Actions projects funded by the Youth Coalition, bringing the youth and road safety movement to her local community.

She has supported the “Safer Street Participation Design With Youth Project” and helped students of Junior High School 22 Bandung City assess school zones resulting in a collection of youth demands on road safety, an advocacy project for the Government of Bandung City seen in the risk management around school zones assessed through the Star Rating for Schools Possibility, and interventions that could change 2-star roads to 5-star ones.

The school zone saw improvements in road design through a more visible crossing for students, a pedestrian lane that can clearly be seen by motorists, and some signs that indicate a school zone in the Junior High School 22 Bandung school zone. It was built through mutual collaboration with 3M Indonesia. It has directly impacted over 800 people at Junior High School 22 Bandung City and more than thousands of people who live nearby.

Estiara has also represented the Youth Coalition in global events, most notably the High-Level Meeting on Road Safety 2022 where she gave a speech during a multi-stakeholder panel to represent the demands of young people to decision-makers for road safety. She joined the Minister of Equipment and Transport from Mauritania H.E. Mr. Mokhtar Ahmed El Yedali, Executive Director of FIA Foundation Mr. Saul Billingsley, and President of the Foundation of Gonzalo Rodriguez in Uruguay Ms. Fernanda Rodriguez.

Talking about addressing the biggest killer of youth, Estiara called on local and global leaders to make the right decision and have youth represented in all stages of policymaking and decision-making that have to do with road safety and sustainable mobility.

“I want to express my sincere appreciation to the YOURS - Youth for Road Safety team for all your unlimited support that has definitely helped me to grow as a professional, learn new skills, and gain confidence in my field. I am grateful for all the mentorship I've received as a YLB member that enhanced a positive impact at YOURS and also in my organization at the Ministry of Transport, Indonesia.”

Estiara continues to serve the Ministry of Transport in Indonesia and the Global Youth Coalition for Road Safety to demand and deliver road safety for youth and other vulnerable road users.
