Local Actions winner holds camp event focused on art and vulnerable road users

Shehab Abou Zeid and his team from NADA Foundation are leading a project inspired by one of our campaigns, Art for Road Safety. Shehab’s project looks to engage young people to join the road safety movement by creating graffiti in places where young people would usually gather. This includes areas around universities, social clubs, and more.

The earlier stages of the project began with the recruitment of young leaders from areas that include urban planning, political sciences, or medical studies through social media channels. Gender balance was also considered in the selection. The recruited youth were then invited to join the Art for Vulnerable Road Users’ Camp Event.

The camp was organized by Shehab’s team along with partners from the Nada Foundation, Tabdeel, Helwan Medical Students Association, and StartUp Haus Cairo.

Apart from the Camp, Shehab’s project also included a capacity-building training session to educate the young people participating in their project about road safety. They also provided educational packages on road safety, especially for vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists.

The educational package discussed the correlations between road safety and climate action from the themes of public health, urban planning for mobility, and advocacy in theory and practice.

The curriculum was based on peer-to-peer sessions with certified young experts and practitioners. The contents of the educational packages were supported by instructors from the Egyptian road safety scene for example Dr. Ahmed Shelbaya, Shehab Abou Zeid, Heba Moussa, Abd Elrahman Hegazy. Moataz Shereef, Esraa Samir, Esraa Shereef. Rahma Khaled, and Youstina Ebeid.

Shehab and his team conducted pre and post-questionnaire assessments to evaluate the learnings among the youth group, and to measure the change in the youth group’s knowledge and understanding of the conceptual framework of terminologies such as active mobility, eco-mobility, and micro-mobility.

Through the assessments, the team could also gather data on the intersectionality and the relationship between creating a safe and sustainable mobility system.

At the end of the camp, all participants succeeded in seeing the correlation between creating a sustainable urban mobility system accelerating decarbonization, and promoting environmental conditions.
