The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) held a webinar on youth and road safety last 11 September 2020. Youth Advisory Board Member, Olivia Nalwadda, was part of the two panelists who gave their insights on the youth movement for safer roads and sustainable mobility.

Among the issues discussed during the panel was the role of coalitions in engaging, connecting, and mobilizing youth toward a common goal or target. Key challenges and issues that could hinder the growth or development of coalitions were also tackled. The conversation led to the struggles of sustaining commitments from key stakeholders.

Olivia shared her knowledge and experiences with the Global Youth Coalition for Road safety, emphasizing the importance of long term investments on the movement. She talks about how the Coalition is working on different facets from recruitment to capacity development to ensure that youth leaders are empowered to lead the change toward sustainable development.

Another key point during the panel discussion was the need to bridge the gaps between generations so that youth can link with different people and groups from different countries and areas.

The Coalition is made up of a diverse group of members. It connects different young leaders from all over the world who work on different aspects of road safety and sustainable mobility, providing them with a platform to present their ideas, resources to improve their knowledge on road safety, opportunities that widen their network, and a team of like-minded youth working for toward the same goal.

The RMTC is looking to get more South African youth involved in road safety. To be effective, the road safety movement needs to gain momentum in all areas of the world. Young leaders need to be given the tools necessary to become effective road safety leaders and advocates.

“All it takes is a yes. Say yes to being a part of the road safety movement, say yes to being a stakeholder, say yes in becoming an investor for the global road safety movement, say yes to a world with safer roads and sustainable mobility”. – Olivia Nalwadda
