Youth Coalition leads road safety discussion during COY17

YOURS Junior Project Manager and Global Youth Coalition for Road Safety Local Actions Winner El Khalil Cherif represented the Youth Coalition during the Conference of Youth (COY17) today, 11 November. They joined a session called “Safer Roads Towards a Climate-Proof Future” where they shared the findings and recommendations of the Youth Coalition’s latest Policy Brief on Road Safety and Climate Action.

The SDG 13 Policy Brief presents key data that expounds on the linkages between road safety and climate. It highlights the importance of climate change and the transport sector in determining the future of today’s youth and how young people have the demographic and democratic right to have their demands on climate and road safety heard and incorporated into regional and national decision-making processes. In the Brief, we cite examples of how young people are addressing the climate crisis through road safety actions. Download it today to learn more.

Sana’a talked about road safety as a “neglected public health crisis” and how it connects with safer and more sustainable transport systems that influence different effects on the environment. She elaborated on some of the key data, central messages, and the roles of different stakeholders in achieving targets under SDG 13: Climate Action.

During his intervention, El Khalil brought focus to his Local Actions project titled “Youth Acting for Zero Road Fatalities in Morocco” which aimed to develop an advocacy toolkit for decision-makers in Morocco to achieve meaningful youth involvement to impact the future of safe and sustainable mobility in the country.

He presented examples of how his project links SDG 3.6: Halving the number of road-related deaths and injuries by 2030 and SDG 13: Climate Action to achieve meaningful youth participation, especially in decision-making and policymaking.

During the Conference of Parties (COP 27),  El Khalil had several meetings with Morocco’s official delegation: NARSA, and  Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE). He agreed with NARSA about endorsing our Policy Brief on Climate Action and collaborating with his local Team to implement the toolkit produced to shape road safety policies in Morocco.

El Khalil also encouraged the youth delegates to join the Global Youth Coalition for Road Safety, highlighting the benefits members could achieve by being part of the network.
