Coalition re-launches capacity development session on an introduction to road safety

Last week, 25 November, the Global Youth Coalition re-launched its capacity development session on an Introduction to Road Safety for new members of the Coalition. The first session with the same theme was originally held last year, 30 October 2020.

The session sought to assess the basic knowledge members had about road safety through interactive sessions that involved group discussions and trivia games. The session helped explain key road safety insights in global trends, their relation to youth, and some pointers for action

The session featured World Health Organization (WHO) Director of Social Determinants of Health, Dr. Etienne Krug. Dr. Krug talked to the members about the history of cars and, as a result, the history of road crashes. He highlighted how society worked to improve vehicles and similar modes of transport to support the growth of the community but cautions that we should not accept road crashes as the price for mobility.

Dr. Krug also highlighted different challenges young people and other stakeholders would experience when advocating for safer and more sustainable mobility. However, he also presents strategies on how to overcome these difficulties and use them for the benefit of the road safety project.

He highlights the utilization of the recently launched Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, emphasizing that young people are listed as key stakeholders.

Since the first session, where the Coalition only had 300 to 400 members, the number has grown to close to 800 within just about a year. The Coalition offers support for members and amplifies the impact they have in their communities as road safety champions. Apart from capacity development sessions, the Coalition also offers a platform, partnerships, funding, and more.
