Raquel Barrios talks about the Coalition during road safety webinar launched by the Basque Government

Last week, December 2, Coalition Project Manager Raquel Barrios joined road safety leaders from all over the world during a webinar launched by the Basque Government. The webinar had the theme Road Safety in Euskadi, Sustainable Development Goal 2030. 

 The webinar featured different panels that discussed road safety from different perspectives. The panels included topics on Vision Zero and the Safe Systems Approach, implementing the 2030 agenda for sustainable development, sustainable mobility, and the road safety model based on leadership and education. 

The central theme was the mission of contributing to the well-being and safety of road users in the Basque road network. Basque Government Traffic Director Sonia Diaz de Corcuera said that the mission can be achieved “by promoting road safety, fluidity in traffic and safe and sustainable mobility based on prevention, coordination, and institutional co-responsibility with special attention to the most vulnerable groups.” 

During her discussion, Raquel talked about the importance of engaging and involving young people in road safety efforts. She talked about how the Coalition provides youth with a platform where they can connect with other youth leaders and where they have access to tools and resources that could improve the impact they could make in their communities. 

Raquel emphasized how leaders should involve young people in decision-making efforts and how youth should be addressed as important stakeholders in the road safety movement instead of just as victims and perpetrators of road crashes.

 

In ending the talk, Raquel pointed out how road safety connects with other Sustainable Development Goals. As stated in the Global Youth Statement, road safety connects with health, education, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities, and climate action.
