Meet the Winners of Local Actions 2024

 
 
 



Last week, 18th of February, the Global Youth Coalition released the list of winners for Local Actions 2024. The Youth Coalition will support sixteen exceptional youth leaders from around the world in the implementation of road safety projects that focus on (1) Advocacy for Policy Change, (2) Community Mobilisation and Awareness, (3) Improving Cities’ Infrastructure and Public Spaces, and (4) Innovation, Data, and Technology.

Meet the winners below;

 

ANGIE ANGEL FROM COLOMBIA

Angie is a civil engineer currently pursuing a Master's degree in Transportation. She is driven by her passion for active mobility and transportation as a means of social inclusion, particularly for children and the elderly.

Her project, YOUMS: Young Motorcyclists for Safer Cities, aims to understand the perspectives and experiences of young motorcyclists. The results will help Angie and her team better advocate for cooperative spaces promoting road safety, with a focus on youth empowerment and inclusive decision-making.

 
 

 
 

DINDZE OLIVE DUBILAfrom cameroon

Dindze is an outgoing master’s in civil engineering student from the National Advanced School of Public Works Yaoundé. She held intern positions as Junior Safety Specialist at the Ministry of Public Works collaborating in the implementation of gender responsive transport and safety projects funded by multi-development banks.

Her project, Youths for Safe and Inclusive Mobility, aims to enhance the safety and mobility situation of young women and persons-with-disabilities (PWDs) in Yaoundé Cameroon, by empowering them to talk about their situation.

 
 

 
 

EZZI NAIDICH FROM ARGENTINA

Ezzi is an International Relations graduate and advocate for safer cities. As the Road Safety Coordinator in Asociación MiNU, she has led various road safety advocacy and traffic education projects, including the campaign #Don’tGetDistracted and VIA Program.

Her project, Ask the Congress for Safer Speeds, aims to empower youth to meaningfully participate in the decision-making process of reducing urban speed limits. The project's primary goal is to place youth as leaders and facilitators of advocacy campaigns in Argentina by supporting the campaign for an urban speed reduction law with new tools.

 
 

 
 

ICHOR SELUMUN PAUL FROM NIGERIA

Ichor is a civil engineer and a consultant with Geotek Water Solution Limited. He specialises in designing and implementing solutions for water management and infrastructure development. Driven by a passion for road safety advocacy, he devotes his free time to promoting awareness and leading a change in my community.

His project, Journey to School, aims to incorporate the safe system approach to advocate and create safer streets around school zones for students in and around Nigeria. The project will employ a strategic approach which seeks to advocate for safer road infrastructure, speed limits of 20-30km/h, and safer road practices for students and other vulnerable road users.

 
 

 
 

JACOB SMITH FROM THE USA

Jacob is the Regional Leader of the Global Youth Coalition for Road Safety and believes young people are the most powerful organic intellectuals in our movement. With a comprehensive background in nonprofit organizational managеmеnt, fundraising, and business dеvеlopmеnt, Jacob has spent nearly a dеcadе catalyzing positivе changе in communities across thе US.

His project, Youth Power for Transportation Equity, will harness the power of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color identifying to spearhead a national conversation on the role of BIPOC youth in transforming the US transportation system to be equitable, inclusive, and sustainable.

 
 

 
 

JADA BROWN FROM BELIZE

Jada works with the Second Road Safety Project as the Office Assistant and Caretaker.

Her project, School Safety Zone Improvement and Education or S.S.Z.I.E will continue an initiative started by The Second Belize Road Safety Project as a Pilot Project to improve the safety aspect of at-risk school zones around the country of Belize.

The Pilot Project was led by YOURS - Youth for Road Safety, AMEND, and other local stakeholders through the Belizean Youth for Road Safety Institutional Strengthening Consultancy in 2023.

 
 

 
 

Jeffrey Leandro from peru

Jeffrey is an environmental advocate and biologist. He currently serves as the leader of the "PEDALEA SEGURO" initiative through Red Por la Convivencia Vial and Conservamos Por Naturaleza SPDA.

His project, Pedalea Seguro, aims to revolutionize Lima, Peru's urban landscape by promoting cycling as a safe, efficient, and preferred mode of transportation. The project's objectives are to create a comprehensive database for the city's bike lanes, partner with a local government to implement a connectivity or segregation bike lane project, and establish partnerships with local businesses to install bike parks.

 
 

 
 

Lojaina Abdelmawla from egypt

Lojaina is a writer and a teacher.

Her project, Now I See: Empowering Accessible Mobility for the Visually Impaired, aims to address, as well as alleviate, the struggles that visually impaired people go through in their day-to-day commute and mobility. he project also aims to target youth (both visually impaired and unimpaired) to advocate for the issue, and make way for them to participate meaningfully by conducting workshops and awareness campaigns in order to deconstruct the social biases against visually impaired people.

 
 

 
 

Mary Abungu from kenya

Mary is a transportation engineer and a road safety advocate She works at TIMCON Associates and is the founder of Sustainable Mobility Africa. She has an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from The University of Nairobi and a master’s degree in Transport Engineering, Planning and Management from Newcastle University.

Her project, Connect the Dots, Save a Life, focuses on improving the collection, analysis, and dissemination of road safety data in collaboration with relevant agencies and stakeholders. This project understands aims to strengthen collaboration with stakeholders so as to enhance road safety data collection infrastructure and systems and improve reporting mechanisms and documentation processes that influence policies, strategies and funding across all relevant sectors.

 
 

 
 

Michelle Gaibor from ecuador

Michelle is a Political Scientist and a Project Coordinator for Foundation Movidana.

Her project, Champions for Road Safety, targets young individuals aged 18-35 across Ecuador, aiming to empower them as advocates for road safety within their communities. The project seeks to cultivate a network of young advocates who can contribute to road safety efforts at both local and national levels. These Champions will serve as key facilitators in bridging the gap between stakeholders and the successful adoption of road safety policies.

 
 

 
 

Nikita Luthfi Adriyana from indonesia

Nikita is currently in her clinical rotation phase as a medical student at Padjadjaran Univesity. She is also an active in an organization, namely CARS Indonesia, as its general manager. As a medical student, Nikita learned that everyone's health is an important thing that we would have to be aware of. She began to realize that there are many cases of crashes and even student deaths in my country, Indonesia, both as perpetrators and victims.

Her project, Padjadjaran Emergency Medical Services Model is an innovative post-crash response model that will be further developed by utilising and involving data and resources from learning institutions across Indonesia.

 
 

 
 

PANKHURI JAIN FROM INDIA

Pankhuri holds a bachelor's degree in computer science. She has been involved with civic work for the last 5 years, started as a Fellow of the Community Connect Fellowship (CCF). She believes that active citizens are necessary for the development of a sustainable community, and that youth are the ones who can make this happen.

Her project, Community Connect, centered around community mobilisation, advocacy, and awareness. It involves educating young people on road safety issues, fostering citizen awareness to improve road infrastructure. The project’s approach involves educating young people on road safety issues, fostering citisen awareness to improve road infrastructure, and collaborating with various stakeholders to systematically address road-related challenges.

 
 

 
 

Paola Becerra García from mexico

Paola is a feminist activist trained in community risk management, ecofeminism and defense of the territory in Mexico. Trained in community risk management, ecofeminism, and defense of the territory in Mexico and Latin America, Paola has collaborated with the Reflexión y Acción Feminista collective since 2014.

Her project, Entornos Amables, looks to strengthen the urban road safety and autonomy of children, youth, women and the LGBTQI+ population living in the south of Mérida, Yucatán. he project seeks to reduce the barriers that limit the enjoyment of the right to safe mobility and the right to a healthy environment, through the construction of accurate information through a new cyclist count and promote the construction of friendly environments in which people can be mobile.

 
 

 
 

Richard Santoso from indonesia

Richard is a programmer and a member of Koalisi Pejalan Kaki, a pivotal force advocating for pedestrian rights in Indonesia. He is currently immersed in the vibrant environment of an international company and is also a proud member of Koalisi Pejalan Kaki, a pivotal force advocating for pedestrian rights in Indonesia.

His project, Advocating Pedestrian Rights through Mapping Initiative, looks to utilise innovation, data, and technology in the creation of a mobile app to report pedestrian rights violations like broken sidewalks, illegal parking, and faded zebra crossings.

 
 

 
 

Star Okereh from Nigeria

Star has dedicated her career to promoting change and empowering marginalised communities. She currently works as a manager at an NGO focused on Safety, Healthy Environment, and sustainable development. Her advocacy journey began during her undergraduate studies, where she became deeply involved in student activism. Since then, she has continued to pursue opportunities to create positive change, particularly in addressing the challenges faced by women and youth in my community.

Her project, Empowering Women for Safe and Inclusive Mobility in Abuja, is designed to address the gender-specific challenges faced by women in road safety, particularly in Abuja, Nigeria. This project seeks to educate and empower young women aligning with road safety and related Sustainable Development Goals.

 
 

 
 

Steffel Ludivin Feudjio Tezong from cameroon

Steffel is a Civil Engineer and PhD candidate at Sapienza University, specialising in innovative technology in road safety. He collaborates with the research group in developing technology-based road safety and sustainable transport solutions in different regions with an emphasis on LMICs.

His project, DataMobilize: Empowering Youth for Safer Roads, aims to improve road safety and meaningful youth participation in Yaoundé by implementing a platform to improve road safety data collection, enhance young road safety skills, facilitate targeted interventions, and empower youth active participation.
